The Detroit Iron Gloves came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil the
anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,, was 5 to
4.
Detroit came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs
using 2 hits. Scott Rolen led off the inning for Detroit when he reached on
an error. Kelly Shoppach next to the plate and he lashed a single. Shoppach
took second on the throw. Marcus Giles followed, but he was set down on
strikes. Brian Anderson struck out, unable to help the rally. Chris Shelton
stepped into the box and doubled bringing in two baserunners. Both teams
totaled 9 on the afternoon.
The win was credited to Geoff Geary(3-2) who went 1/3 of an inning allowing no
runs. Geary was helped out by Francisco Rodriguez who recorded his 9th save.
Mariano Rivera(6-3) suffered the loss in relief.
Mike Wilson was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last at
bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there?
You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that's what
makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over
'til its over.'
